A normal nut is 6 sided or hexagonal but a square nut as the name suggests is a 4 sided and square shaped nut. It provides more surface area in contact with the parts being fastened and hence provide a greater resistance to being loosened (or tightened). Brass Square nuts are generally used with square bolts. The sharp edges of a square nut can damage the parts that are being fastened; therefore, a washer is often used along with a square nut.
